A pedestrian village at 1,600 m — larch, stone and woodsmoke, twelve minutes from the last chair to a hot drink. Four things you'll need before and after.

The Cornice Lodge

Forty rooms and a south-facing sauna deck, ski-in to a boot room that dries everything by dawn. Half-board, because you won't want to leave the fire.

Fifty instructors in eleven languages. First-timers to off-piste guiding — small groups, or private if you'd rather not have witnesses. Kids' club runs all day.

Après at Le Sérac

The terrace that catches the last sun on the mountain. Vin chaud, a very serious fondue, and a band that starts the moment the Gondola stops. Bring your ski boots; everyone does.
