[ Bench-made · Est. 2011 · one workshop ]

Cut to the grain. Joined to the tenth of a millimetre.

Bespoke, made-to-order furniture in solid oak, walnut and blackened steel. Every piece is drawn as an orthographic elevation, cut to hand-fit joinery, and made to outlast the room it was ordered for.

PLATE 01 — Halyard Lounge, side elevation solid white oak · Belgian linen

[ The collection ]

Four pieces, made to order.

Nothing is held in stock. Each piece is drawn, quoted and cut to your room — the same joints, the same tolerances, whichever timber you choose. Prices are a starting point; the grain has the final word.

Halyard Lounge

£2,400

solid white oak · Belgian linen · oiled

A low, reclined lounge with a slung linen seat. The one you sink into and forget the time.

Tolerance Table

£3,850

American walnut · blackened steel trestle

A ten-foot top on a welded steel frame. Draw-bored joinery, so it never racks — seats eight without a wobble.

quarter-sawn oak · hand-cut dovetails · brass

Three graduated drawers, each corner joined by hand. The pins are ours — thin, angled, unmistakable.

[ The joinery ]

Drawn before it's cut.

No piece leaves the bench that wasn't first a drawing. Scroll to turn the Halyard Lounge through its elevations — front, three-quarter, side — then choose a material to see the piece, and its spec, change with it.

[ Materials ]

We buy the tree, not the board.

Timber is bought in the log, air-dried three years under cover, then finished in the kiln to furniture moisture. We work four materials, and we work them honestly — no veneer, no stain pretending to be another wood, no filler in the grain.

White oak

rift & quarter-sawn · Janka 1360 · 0.3%/RH

Cut on the quarter so the medullary rays flash silver across the face. The most stable timber we work — a drawer front in oak barely moves through a wet winter.

American walnut

plain-sawn · Janka 1010 · oiled, never stained

Chocolate heartwood that lightens toward honey with age and daylight. We book-match the boards so a tabletop reads as one mirrored sheet of grain, not a run of planks.

Blackened steel

3 mm hot-rolled · TIG-welded · wax-inhibited

Frames and trestles are cut from hot-rolled plate, welded, ground flush, then blackened with heat and oil rather than paint. It ages to a soft graphite, and a scratch just adds to it.

Belgian linen

480 g/m² flax · loose cushion · washable

Upholstery is heavyweight Belgian flax over latex and feather. Every cover is loose and zipped, so a spilt glass of red is a wash, not a re-upholstery.

[ Commission ]

Tell us the room.

Every commission starts with the space, not the catalogue. The wall it sits against, the light it gets, who's going to sit in it and how tall they are. We draw it, quote it, and put you in the book.
